4. Never reveal an exact number for your desired salary or what you’re currently making.
5. Have a bottom line in mind.
6. Remember that this should be a win-win for you and your future employer.
7. Work this out with your future boss rather than their HR staff person.
Although the point of this post is to give you a simple and quick overview of things to keep in mind, there are a few things we would like to elaborate on.
Almost all of the tips are based on the first: do your homework. This is the only way you can be prepared enough to present yourself as a valuable asset, know what you are worth and if what you are asking is in fact fair and play things out so they would be a win-win for both parties involved.
We cannot stress this enough – research is essential for any job seeker these days. It should begin with a simple Google or Yahoo search for the company name but should evolve from there. Try to learn as much as you can about the company, it’s rivals, the market it is in, it’s market share, any great successes the company might have had in the past and definitely the threats that the company has to deal with in the future. If you know who yo will be interviewing with, try to find out as much as you can about them as well.
Believe us on this. The more you know about the company going in to the interview benefits you in many ways. You will seem more knowleadgeble and you can form better informed questions that show your future employer that you are already “in the know.”
