How to Prepare For a Successful Interview

DiggThis Share

Refresh your memory on what you’ve learned about the company during your research. If necessary, do some new research so that you are really up to date on the latest news and innovations about this particular company. Be careful to only read about this company so you don’t get the information mixed up while you are under pressure. It won’t impress anyone if you attribute something to them they know isn’t true.

Get up early enough so that you have plenty of time to arrive without feeling rushed. Allow for traffic jams or slow public transport. It’s better to be an hour early and have to wait in the coffee shop across the road, than to be ten minutes late. Arriving at your interview late won’t give a good first impression.

Wear clothing appropriate to the job. Don’t arrive for an executive position dressed in blue jeans and a T-shirt. If you are being interviewed for a position of sheep herder, don’t turn up in a business suit. Wearing the correct clothing will identify you as a person who cares enough to get it right the first time. It will also give you a great deal of confidence to know you are dressed correctly.

Wear clothing appropriate to the weather. If you wear your best winter suit on a summery day, you’ll feel uncomfortably hot and bothered. If something is too tight, it will prevent you from keeping your mind totally on the interview.

Make sure your personal grooming is number one. Body odor is a big no-no, no matter what type of job you are applying for. Interviewers won’t be impressed if you show up looking like you need a haircut or shave. Don’t overdo the perfume though. Discreet is best.

If you are shy, practice talking to imaginary interviewers in the mirror at home, from there, progress to family members or friends until you feel comfortable. This may be more important than you realize. Shyness is often mistaken for snobbery, which will go against you. Employers want to know their prospective employees will be able to get along with everyone else in the company
