You have the option of either starting your own home-based business or applying to a company that employs billers and coders from home. If you are lucky enough to find a company that hires at-home coders then you should have your resume ready to send in.

What can you expect when you work from home?
Working from home is an entirely different feel from working in a traditional office setting, what makes it so different? You control the hours you work and you have to manage your time wisely and knowledgeable enough in your field that when you receive new clients, contracts and/or assignments you have to adapt. No client, assignment or contract is created equal; they will each have different methods, procedures and insurance acceptance methods that you have no choice but to adapt. In order to do this successfully it will require that you train in various aspects of the billing and coding field like medical terminology, ICD-9-CM, Current Procedural Terminology and many others.

Freelancing can be more difficult for those that do not have the experience, reputation and the education within the field. Providers must ensure that the privacy of their patients are secure per HIPPA and other federal rules and regulations, if these measures are not taken the provider could risk losing their license so they will not risk providing sensitive information to someone without experience. As stated above, you will have to self-manage yourself so potential employers need to know that the assignments given will done accurately and in a timely manner.

The process of working with an online company will generally consist of you accepting billing and/or coding assignments and a deadline that you must complete the assignment by. Now the difference between working with an online company and working as a freelancer or independent contractor, is that you lose some of the control and flexibility with due dates. Many billers and coders that currently own their own home-based business generally find that working with an at-home company is a step that helped them become accustomed to working from home.
